People who don’t live in places that experience snow fall often wish to go to snowy regions as tourists. However, only those who live at these kinds of places know how difficult it is to commute on roads and highways after snowfall. While, most of us think that it takes hardly some time to remove the snow from the roads, but only few know how it is done.
Keeping in mind that snow covered roads become the reason of many traffic accidents, government authorities use the best methods to remove the snow from highways as soon as possible. Depending on the type and level of precipitation, different methods and strategies are followed for clearing snow from the highways. Generally, two concerns are taken care of while removing snow from highways, firstly, to remove snow and ice and secondly, to make sure that the travelers get enough traction on the roads.
Mechanical Methods
The most widely used method for removing snow from highways is using the machines like snow plows, bowers and pushers. These snow-removing machines help removing ice and snow that block the roads. They provide two-fold benefits, i.e., they remove the snow and also expose the next layer of the highway that needs to be cleared off snow.
Chemicals
Chemicals are widely used to de-ice or anti-ice the highways covered with snow and ice. Using chemical methods and chemicals prevent the ice forming from moisture that is present on the roads and also helps in melting the ice that is already present on the roads. It is one of the quickest ways to clear the roads off snow.
Abrasives
Another common method of removing snow from highways is using abrasives. Materials like sand and gravel when mixed with salt or those which are pre-treated with a chemical de-icer are spread on snow-covered roads to provide instant and temporary traction in slippery conditions to avoid accidents.
Whatever method the authorities choose, the main aim is to remove snow from the highways making it accessible for the travelers. All methods have their own advantages and are tried on depending on the requirement.
